Christian Conservatives Reject Romney & Gingrich. Who’s Left?: Ron Paul

Voters making up the Conservative Base of the Republican Party have had a difficult time deciding who their favorite alternative to Mitt Romney is going to be.  In a mere 5 month stretch, Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry, Herman Cain, and Newt Gingrich have each been vetted in the polls and found wanting.  Motivated by lingering Tea Party sentiments, Movement Conservatives are desperate for a candidate to rally around and be excited about; they’re sick and tired of settling for the lesser evil offered to them by the Republican Establishment cycle after eleciton cycle.

Conservative acticists find Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich equally unacceptable, with their flip-flopping and randomly liberal policy positions.  They are simply not trustworthy enough to warrant a Principled Conservative’s vote.  So who does that really leave them with?

There was Herman Cain, but he’s no longer even an option.

There’s Rick Perry, but even if a Conservative can get past the mandatory HPV vaccines, tuition breaks for illegal immigrants, and the Trans Texas Corridor, there’s still the simple fact that Mr. Perry seems unable to quit shooting himself in the foot with erratic statements and total brain farts.

There’s that other Rick, who endorsed party-traitor Arlen Spector, and may actually be too hawkish for widespread Conservative support.  No Conservative will give John Huntsman the time of day (he worked for Obama after all), and none have even heard of Gary Johnson.

So, for many Principled Conservatives, it comes down a choice between Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul.  I’ve been hearing this a lot from Conservative activists in Oklahoma.  Fortunately, I expect that Michele will drop out well before Oklahoma’s primary on March 6th.  Her fundraising has been very weak, and she has very little on-the-ground organization.  Ron Paul on the other hand can dial up a million-dollar money bomb any time he wants, and has more volunteers than he knows what to do with; in other words, he has the staying power to take his campaign all the way to the national convention.

But leaving practical politics aside, what is it that Conservatives are looking for in a candidate?  A person of conviction and principle?  A commitment to traditional American values?  A private life free of scandal?  Adherence to the Constitution and the Founders’ vision for America?  A true supporter of Israel?  A high regard for the sanctity of life?  Someone with a real plan to get the country back on track?  Someone with a track record to back up their rhetoric?  Ron Paul posseses these charactierstics in spades.

More and more Christian Conservatives are beginning to realize this, as demonstrated by Paul’s steady rise in the Iowa polls, to the point now that many political insiders are predicting a Ron Paul victory on January 3rd.  Christian Conservatives are discovering an advocate in Ron Paul like they have never known.

Here’s my appeal to Christian Conservatives in Oklahoma:  It’s time for this bandwagon to grow.  It’s time to understand that you have repeatedly been betrayed by the Republican Establishment, but you don’t have to take it anymore!  Ron Paul has the principles, the honesty, and trustworthiness that you so desire.  But unlike Bachmann, he also has the momentum and broad appeal necessary to mount a credible challenge to Romney and Gingrich.
